She died at Balmoral Castle, her beloved summer home in the Scottish Highlands. Many of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were at Balmoral or on their way there, including her son Prince Charles, the heir to the throne.
Private Elizabeth Windsor joined the women's branch of the British Army — the Auxiliary Territorial Service — during World War II, becoming the first female member of the royal family to serve as a full-time, active member of the military. During her service, she learned to drive and maintain vehicles and prepared as a motorcycle courier.
