Tacoma Speedway

Here are a couple of gems from Tacoma Speedway.

Red Cogburn performs sidecar stunt - Tacoma Speedway 1917.

This just in, from our resident motorcycle racing historian, and all around good guy, Tom Samuelsen:

Upper photo: is a Henderson and the rider that day is one of two people who rode it. Wells Bennett of Portland Oregon or a national rider I have his name in the file [Red Cogburn?].

Lower photo: is Elmer Bergstrom that set a 24 hour record on a light weight motorcycle at the Tacoma Track.
The photo journalist that took the photos was Frank Richardson Pierce."

The bottom bike is rather unique. An Indian Model "O". Intended to be an entry level bike, power came from a 15.7 cubic inch (257 cc) fore and aft opposed twin, rated at 2.75 hp, propelling the machine to a top speed of 45 mph. Lightness, economy, and reliability didn't win too many people over; it became known as the Model "Nothing".
