Kevin Windham Retires

I was a little bummed to learn Kevin Windham announced his retirement from Supercross. To put his career into perspective at 34 Kevin has been competitively racing professional Supercross longer than some of his competitors have been alive.

Admittedly part of the reason I now enjoy rooting for Windam is that he is the "old guy." The old guy that genuinely stays competitive. I was a fan when he was the kid out there too. Kevin has been pretty unbeatable whenever track conditions get ultra extreme, like heavy mud. Kevin has always been extremely fluid and smooth as a rider, making everything just seem effortless. He is also unusually tall for a Supercross rider. Historically tall riders have often looked lanky and awkward but for Kevin it never seemed to be an impediment.

Kevin has always well understood the showmanship aspect of the sport too. Early on his finishline trademark was his signature Heel Clicker. This was pre-FMX. In those days Supercross was the only place you ever saw stuff like that.

Kevin's pre-show "transfer" jumps are still the stuff of legend.  I've heard countless guys comment "Hell no I'm not doing that!"

I'm really bummed that in almost 20 years of racing I never got to see him race live. Good luck Kevin, you'll be missed. I'd bet money he winds up in a rally car or something similar.

Pool Crossing

Flathead Rob & I were talking about Travis Pastrana's pool crossing a few days ago. He had never seen the footage. The quality of the video I found is pretty bad but you'll get the idea.

1949 Triumph GP Replica

This bike sold at MidAmerica for $25,000. I remember seeing the bike for sale prior to MidAmerica for $32,500.

I think I heard somewhere that Randy Baxter was highest bidder and the reserve was $25,000. If that's the case I'd expect to see it for sale again some time soon.
I just love GP's.

Ran When Parked

1958 Triumph Bonneville -  I guess this is Triumph night. Some might be saying ah... the Bonneville wasn't offered until 1959. This was apparently one of the earliest examples built in September 1958. I think one the coolest features is the dealer decal from the dealer that originally sold it.

Pretty cool but $40,000 is a boat load of money for ANY first year Bonnie. I don't think I hold my breath in anticipation of it selling at that price. I've seen a 1957 Triumph T100/RS factory road racer listed at the same price point several times now without selling.

1953 T100C Motor

The Big D boys are just buttoning up a '53 T100C engine. Pretty sexy.

Tiger Update

Flathead Rob and I took a little time today to fix Emma's (my '51 Tiger) intake leak.  Poor old girl just needs a little love. Come see us Lurker Tom and I'll ensure she is running right the next time you ride her.

Born Free 5 Invitaion Builders

An Albuquerque transplant done well. I talked to Trent about his Born Free Builder Invitation when I last saw him. He genuinely didn't think it was a big deal. I do. I can't think of a more deserving builder.

Trent knows he's good at what he does and I got the impression he didn't feel like he needed any additional validation or notoriety. He wasn't a prick or cocky about , it just wasn't that big a deal to him.

Baron's Stray Cat

Pretty cool. I found this on Bubble Visor. I'm only posting this so I can find the pictures again should I need it as a reference.

Log Hauler

This post on The Old Motor nicely complements the photo I posted earlier in the week. If you aren't already following The Old Motor start now.

Ever find yourself lusting after something that defies every possible argument for practicality and reason?

Bring a Trailer

And as long as we are talking McQueen, how's this for one that would look good in your garage. Sure, I know it's not a motorcycle related but I have a lot of history with a Charger of this era.

I'm not feeling very well tonight so I'm vegging out watching Barrett-Jackson on TV. Loads of rich guys are blowing loads of money on muscle cars that aren't nearly as cool as this one. Sounds like the seller might not have the documentation required to justify the $1,000,000 asking price though.

Ran When Parked

1928 Harley Davidson JD - As long as I'm on a JD kick... This one is not as glitzy as the one I posted previously, but hell, it belonged to Steve McQueen.
