I might need some help from Rob on this one. mid-to-late 30's Scout? Everything in this photo is cool.

Oregon
Based on the background it looks like this photo might have been shot in Oregon. Anyone recognize the location?

Hauler
My wife has been extremely tolerant of my vintage motorcycle obsession over the years. One component of that has been her willingness to occasionally bail me out when the when the almost inevitable mechanical happens on 50+ year old motorcycles. In appreciation I like to make the occasional rescue as painlessly as possible for her (i.e. throw a ramp in the truck and drive to wherever we are). If the truck breaks down on the way there that sort of becomes too much to ask. At 20 years old and nearly 200,000 my previous hauler was starting to become less than reliable. I recently opted to replace it. So far the new one has not hauled a bike. Is it obvious I have a thing for blue?
I love the new truck but I'll still miss the old one. My son is already preferring to ride in the backseat of this one over the jump-seat in the old one. His fit back there was better 10 years ago.

WAAM
My brother Rob, son Vaughn and I made the trek down to intercept the Motorcycle Cannonball in the Dalles, Oregon last weekend. We decided to hit the WAAM Museum along the way. We were all quite impressed. My favorite was easily this Sopwith Pup.

Triumph Hacking
It's pretty rare that I am able to combine my day job and my hobby. It's probably not accidental that 20 years in IT Security may have made me gravitate toward the "no tech" world of vintage motorcycles. I guess it's an escape.
Several news outlets reported this week that A team of researchers at the KU Leuven university in Belgium were able to exploit a weak 40 bit cryptographic key utilized in wireless key fobs used on the Tesla Model S. With $600 worth of radio and computing equipment researchers were able to cryptographically attack and clone a fob in less than two seconds. This cloned fob would allow the attacker to drive away with the car as in effect they would "have a key."
Pektron, the company that supplies the key fob system, also provides the fobs used by McLaren and Triumph motorcycles. Researchers did not have access to a Triumph motorcycle for testing but it's very likely the same attack would work on a Triumph. That said, the Triumphs I really care about you could steal with a tickle and a kick. No key required.

Nerd Love
I saw this photo recently and was just horrified. I think there’s a pretty fair chance I might be this guy.

Original Paint Speed Twin
You don’t see many original paint Triumphs of this era. If memory serves this one belongs to the guys at Ace Classics.

Goodwood
Goodwood is perhaps top of my current bucket list. I have absolutely got to make it there some day.

Freestyle Evolution
Pro motocrosser Josh Hill has been posting content of him riding an electric Alta motocross bike in an Oregon skate park. I recall getting similar sorts of “attention” on BMX bikes in skate parks in the 80’s. I love to see the cultural evolution continue and perhaps even a little influenced by BMX, rather than vice versa. Motorcycling is not a crime...

Shanghai Taxi
These Haojue Group motorcycles operate as taxis all over Shanghai, this one being a HJ125-8. They are typically used to shuttle commuters from the train to work that don’t care to walk. Haojue also builds motorcycles under the Suzuki name in China, you can see late ‘70s Suzuki in the styling. This same model was still manufactured as late as 2016. Most appear to have huge miles and incorporate homemade fairings, footboards, umbrellas, etc.
I’m told they are no longer issuing motorcycle license plates. If a rider wants to register a new motorcycle he must transfer an existing plate. The intention is apparently to push riders to opt instead for an electric scooter.
